Lagos - To create an awareness on the importance of the activities of United Nations Peacekeepers to school pupils, the United Nations Information Centre Lagos screened films on the theme of the 2011 observance of the International Day of Peacekeepers (Law, Order and Peace), at Badagry Senior Grammar School with pupils of Government Senior College Ajara, Badagry, Lagos in attendance on Tuesday 31 May 2011.
Mrs. Olajumoke Araba, the Library Assistant United Nations Information Centre presented the Secretary General’s message to the Senior Secondary school pupils and some of their teachers in attendance and also stressed the need to remember those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace. She made mention of Hamminat Lawal, a Nigerian Police Peace keeper serving in the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Timor Leste who spoke on her experiences as a Peacekeeper.
Apart from the video for the Day, other video were screened. There were cultural presentations. Public information materials on Peacekeeping and Operations of the United Nations were given to the schools.
No fewer than 85 participants, including teachers from both the hosting and visiting school were in attendance.
